..So, what do you have to say for yourself Mr. Mackey? “Bombs are bad, m’kay”.
Right, I finally figured things out. No, that’s a lie. But yes, I’m gonna present to you one of the greatest rock songs of all time, with all the tech specs and unnecessesary bull shit I think you need to know. And once again, if you don’t give a rat’s ass or if you can’t find the time to learn about the world’s coolest song, well then, go read about how bananas get their color.
Ah, the pressure, now I’ve gotta tell you something cool or you’ll think I’m a banana, or what? Yes. Maybe I should continue telling you stuff on what I’m about to tell you. Much like politicians. Talk about what’s being talked about and asking questions about questions. You follow? Yes you are. Jesus. This insert is about The Cranberries and their hit single “Zombie” from 1994. You know the one which starts with the awesome bass-slam that goes “booom” – and then off to the hit riff that even I know how to play on a 6-stringer. Very much like “Smoke on the water”, only not. Anyway, perhaps you haven’t heard of this song? Well. Check out the video.
( The Cranberries – Zombie )
Right, the song is awesome and everything.. But haven’t you ever wondered what it is about, and why Dolores O’Riordan (the golden girl) is singing “It’s the same old theme since nineteen-sixteen”.. Well, let me “sort of” tell you. Cause that’s when the easter rising occurred in Ireland – loads of rebels and violence ensues. Irish republicans (I almost wrote pubic) wanted to drive the british soldiers away so that they could establish the republic of Ireland.. And the rest is history, or is it? Who am I to talk about Irish history – I know Conan O’Brien has his roots in Ireland, and the capital is Washington..? Am I right?
Yes but, anyway. The video is fantastic. Directed by a fella named Samuel Bayer, and hear me out bitches. This dude has also directed Nirvana’s “Smells like teen spirit” and MCR’s “Famous last words” along with almost hundreds of other great ones.. An awesome man with an awesome CV right? Yes he is! (I just noticed that the man also has directed Robbie Williams’ video “Angels”.. So yes, the CV is quite sufficient!)
You look like you wanna know some crap about the video also.. Yes you do. Don’t you think that the golden girl is quite the lady gaga type of thing, although she was not invented? No you don’t. But yes, all the footage of the British soldiers wandering the streets of pain is actually stuff the shot with real soldiers, and they told the poor guys that the footage was to be used for some “peace-keeping” day-to-day video, to enlighten guys, girls and the staff at Hooters on how to preserve the peace.. What? Yes. So that’s quite strange. The single alone sold like 2 million copies and the video aired in like every single country in the world.. (and this was during the MTV era, so everyone watched music videos on a day to day basis).. And no one of the soldiers, or their friends, noticed? “Check out this video Julius, ah it’s awesome, but wait, that’s me and my gun, yeah sure c’mon, just leave it Julius, have a coke and a smile” (mild Bad Boys reference).
It’s a protest song written by O’Riordan in memory of two boys killed in some IRA bombing back in the early 90′s. It wants us to stop fighting, like thousands of other songs – not mention like every third ESC-song. And hey, the message still works, although this was done during the grunge/old metal era.. So did ya learn anything? No, probably not?
And one thing you gotta mention in “Zombie”-discussions (It sounds like I’m having Zombie discussions for breakfast). The lyrics, the lyrics. A fantastic poem by the Irish grunge/rock makers. The part when the golden gaga on the Jesus cross wails out “with their tanks, and their bombs, and their bombs, and their guns”.. She really goes on singing bombs twice, and here lies the geniusity of the words.. Hence the Mr.Mackey thing.. Everything you wanna point out, say it twice right.. Some might think it’s a cheap ass trick, and some might think like me.. How often do you hear this kind of lyrics? It’s genius! Well, count out all the smash 90′s disco hits.. “It’s my Life, It’s my Life, It’s my Life” – genious move by Dr.Alban? Maybe I’m somewhat a bit paradoxical in my beliefs..?
Any more thoughts on The Cranberries Tage? Well.. Yes. This subject got it’s witty start last week when I found the “no need to argue” record in Citymarket Stenhaga for some silly 6 euros and decided to invest my hard earned dough. The Cranberries – an awesome act!
And what not? Look, the words are changing color..

Oh, ljuva flashbacks..
